Four wheel drive ...how is it done in a moggy

I see some people have put 4wd in their cars how is it usually done ? I have just bought a van( less its van rear body) and would like to use it on dirt roads .
A friend has a sierra 4wd 2.9l v6 in his shed (knackered engine) and it could come my way.. could/would it fit ...perhaps mate the 4wd tranmission to a ford escort mk2 1600 engine??
This would be a long term project as the body will also need repaired..anybody got any ideas(other than fixing the sierra engine)..

Is it possible to raise the back end of a saloon car to get extra clearance under the diff etc... 16" wheels to fit std hubs??

Exactly that conversion (using ALL the Sierra 4wd running gear) has been done with a Mini - so it can be done with a Minor !!

Seriously, I have fitted the running gear from a 4x4 Cosworth under my Convertible.
Sadly the car remains un-finished (see Sig Pic.!)
This car will be Rover powered.

There is a 4x4 Cosworth powered Minor out there, in the Midlands, that has been around for a few years.

You basically have to build a NEW chassis from scratch to mount all the suspension, diff etc on to and then drop the Minor bodyshell over the top.
The bodywork will need modifying, wings especially, as the Sierra is much wider than the Minor.

Having said that I have seen a Mark 1 Escort body dropped onto the standard Sierra floor-pan and them welded on!
PERHAPS that is a possibility?!

BTW - There have also been several Minors with Land Rover chassis built if you really want to go off-road

erm...why? well if you need a land rover for the project i have a 1964 series IIA 88" doing nothing
