I need to remove the steering column on my 1968 minor.
Have undone the bolt at the base and the 2 screw bolts up by the indicator stalk. However cannot get it out. Am i missing something or does it need a bit more weight behind it.
The bolt at the bottom of the column needs to be removed completely. Also check that the wheel is 'straight ahead' when removing it, so that it goes back with the correct alignment.
Once the top and bottom bolts have been removed, waggle the column gently side to side, that will slightly open up the clamped spline at the bottom of the column. After that it should not be difficult to pull the column up towards you.
Thanks for the advice. Steering column off, carpet fitted and column re-inserted. No obvious damage caused, although it nearly took my head off when it came free!
Was a bit of a job opening up that bottom clamp!
I put a cut in my carpet where it goes around the column, much easier to get the carpet out of the way then if need be.
Newtons sent me some edge binding tape in the right colour that I stitched on to make it look neat and finish the edge like the rest of the carpet. Tough going though sewing it.
