Even though the new nut may be very slightly smaller (1/32" per flat) I would suggest that the spanner is made to the original dimensions as the new nuts may just be a one off as the original imperial size material/bar may not have been available at the time.
Personally I would source original BMC spec nuts even if they are or have been used.
