Camshaft differences

Post by Murrum »

Hi,
I'm doing up a 1098 and the camshaft has seen better days, I have a 948 block and want to know if a 948 camshaft would fit into a 1098 without any detrimental effects, both are pin drive?
Thanks,
Chris

The camshafts are interchangeable without any problems.
There are very small differences in the exhaust opening and closing degrees with the 1098cc camshaft (Pt No: AEA630 (MOSS) to the 948cc camshaft (Pt No: 2A297 (MOSS)) which gave slightly longer opening period (252 degrees (1098cc) against 230 degrees (948cc)). Whilst it would be better to replace the camshaft like for like - fitting the 948cc camshaft will not result in you experiencing noticeable detrimental effects.
The cam followers should be fitted to the same lobe on the same camshaft otherwise rapid wear of the cam and follower will take place.
Better to replace the cam followers with new to be on the safe side.

If the camshaft (and therefore engine) has seen better days I would suggest that the oil pump is worn out and needs to be replaced. If that is the case have you considered fitting a camshaft from a Midget/Marina which has the wider 1/2" cam lobes against the 3/8" of the 948cc/1098cc cams and the same timing as the 1098cc Minor engine . The appropriate drive oil pump and spider would have to be obtained. Possibly an easier alternative as the spider on the 1275cc cam is hard to scource is the slot drive cam from a 998cc Metro with slot drive oil pump.
Both camshafts are relatively cheap on 'e' bay.
Here are a couple of suitable camshaft for consideration:-

Thanks,
I should have it out tomorrow and will know the true state of it then. Had a look on ebay.com.au and there is one from a 1100 Mini or Moke for about $80 so not too bad, not many UK sellers will ship to Australia. They stopped selling Minis in Australia in about 1976 and sold about 3 Marina 1300s, most were 1.75 or 2.6 litre, there was a 1.5 litre but wasn't too popular either. As a result things like heads and cams are getting a bit difficult to source second hand.
It will definitely need new piston, lifters, timing chain and oil pump though.
