Ron,
I have no idea when the change over was made but if you have side covers like those in the photo but with an extension pipe going down then you have an open system. It is easy to change it-if you want to. I never bothered on mine as it doesn't leak and there is plenty of fresh air in a convertible.

There are 2 series of engine numbers for the Minor 1098 engine - 10MA and 10ME. The earlier series, 10MA from 1962, had the open crankcase ventilation system, and was superseded by the 10ME engine series, with closed circuit breathing in around 1964/65 I THINK. Hopefully someone will come along with a more definitive answer? My BMC Parts List, dated 1966, includes the later 10ME engine details.
Do you know the engine number fitted to your car? It sounds like you may have a 10MA engine, but I would have thought that in 1968 it should have been the later 10ME. Can you post some pictures of the engine bay, particularly of the rocker cover and inlet manifold area?
As in the previous post, the open breathing system should have a non-vented cap, as the system breathes air in from the air cleaner, through the crankcase and out through the draft tube that extends down from the tappet cover. At least that's the theory. In practice at standstill and low road speeds the draft tube creates no suction, so the fumes drift up into the air cleaner housing and clog up the filter. If you use a vented cap, they will also drift into the engine bay, coat the engine with oil mist and potentially introduce an unpleasant smell into the interior of the car as well.
