Antifreeze renewal

Post by alanworland »

I have just changed the block drain valve on my MM and while the coolant was out I did a quick flush to remove debris from the block.
Put the old, but still quite clean, coolant back in and checked for leakage, and all was ok.
My question is, the Bluecol is due for renewal but can I just drain out the required amount and replace with fresh and achieve the anti corrosion and freezing properties?

My suggestion would be to do as you have done and drain off the specified amount of coolant that would need to be drained as if there was no antifreeze or anti-corrosion in the cooling system and then make up the short fall with the correct amount of new Bluecol & leave it at that.
I have just done that with my Minor.

Even if the Bluecol deteriorates over time you are making up any deterioration with fresh Bluecol.
Draining the coolant system and giving the system a good flush every now and again is as important as having the right strength coolant in the system.
Reuse the drained coolant ensuring that the contaminated dregs are not used.
Dispose of the coolant dregs at your local recycling centre.

Antifreeze/coolant should not be put down the drain or left in open containers which would allow a cat to drink it as it deadly for cats.

The Bluecol - frequently asked questions - states that antifreeze should be changed between 2 & 10 years or as per manufactures instructions.
