Recommended wheel cylinders
What 'brand' brake slave (wheel) cylinders do folk recommend ?
I've come across real rubbish britpart and similar stuff in a previous life, so what's the best moggy brake stuff and who best to buy it from ?

Re: Recommended wheel cylinders
Go for the "genuine" lockheed / AP cylinders, avoid the "pattern" ones. All types are available from most of the traders who advertise in Minor Matters.

Re: Recommended wheel cylinders
In my experience, as well as that of others, pattern rear cylinders are fine. The front ones arent though, due to poor design, so you should avoid them for sure.

Re: Recommended wheel cylinders
Series land rovers, guilty as charged !
I assume the moggy situation is similar with much rubbish pattern part stuff available.
I haven't noticed any brake parts advertised that say Lockheed, and much no name stuff seems to be in evidence.
What is a good supplier that has genuine parts ? The likes of g s Jones have what look to me like pattern part brake stuff.

ESM certainly do the 'Genuine AP Lockheed' ones, as I bought some last year. Just had a look on thier website and they are still there, fronts and rears.

Re: Recommended wheel cylinders
I'll happily fit something like a pattern wing. I know it's not as good as the real McCoy but in most cases the savings make it worth the compromise. A new pattern wing is certainly better than a rusted out original wing and that is sometimes the choice due to cost.
However brakes are another matter and I will always fit genuine parts if I possibly can. Over the years I've had pattern hydraulic parts that have been fine, but I've also fitted several that have failed. With safety critical parts it just isn't worth trying to save a few quid.
Britpart...3 brake master cylinders on a Series Landrover, each failing within a couple of weeks. Genuine parts back in stock and fitted and it's been fine for years.
Let's face it if somebody can make a master cylinder, ship in half way round the world, give the wholesaler and retailer a profit and still sell it to you for £20 the quality has to be a bit suspect.

Re: Recommended wheel cylinders
I would second the above in all ways.
Brakes and cheap don't mix, a few pounds saved could be very costly in the long run.
There is no room for error with standard Minor brakes, no dual circuits, all or nothing.
My rules with brakes are:
Anything less than perfect won't do
Don't buy cheap
If in doubt throw it out
My NS front has pattern cyclinders, fitted prior to my ownership. The OS were replaced by me last year as one was seized. This winters job is a front suspension overhaul and as part of that they are heading for the bin to be replaced with decent ones.

Re: Recommended wheel cylinders
Yes I've had rubbish pattern brake and particularly clutch cylinders fail on land rovers too.
I've replaced flex hoses on the moggy as they were shredded and made up a couple of kunifer pipes as the fronts were nearly rusted through! I want to do a set of decent wheel cylinders whilst I'm in brakes mode, I'll order some from the esm place you mention, thanks for the Intel !
