Re: Pre engaged starter ?
The Minor starter motor (Pt No: GEU9405 (MOSS)) is more than adequate for the 1275cc MG Midget engine (starter motor Pt No: GEU9405 (MOSS)) - so I personally do not see the need for spending money (£205 Pt No: GXE4405X (MOSS))on a pre-engage starter.
The GEU9405 starter motor fitted to my very high compression 1380cc engine never has any problem turning over the engine.

Repair the starter motor? Might be as simple as worn brushes or a dirty commutator.

What is 'duff' about it?
As Phil, a standard Lucas starter spins our 1380 over with no problem at all. Better to spend the extra money on making it go/stop/handle better!
