I've never had an issue with stonechip cracking, aside from when applied to a poorly prepped surface. I did the underside of my motorcycle guards 10 years ago. Plenty of stones have chipped the 2K paint surface but nothing has broken the stonechip and no cracking.

I think it also pays to remember that this is a sight for Hobbyists. Not everyone wants to invest in a compressor, gun and safety equipment. A properly applied layer of stonechip will afford far more protection than a few flicks with a Halfords aerosol can.

I personally think if you're running cars of this type a compressor is a must and an exceptionally useful addition to and workshop especially considering they can be bought really cheaply at the likes of ALDI these days mine was £99 and that was the expensive one. Shutz gun £7 on ebay cant beat it for whatever your choice of rust proofing.

first you prep and paint the underside .Then I have a concoction! you melt bar and chain oil with toilet wax rings together .Apply warm to underside of the car, it is less expensive and will creep over chips from stones.Let's hope no one will see the underside of your car on the highway ( mix 60% oil to 40%wax)

In 1998, after 6 years of restoration, where I double seam welded every seam on the car, no spot welds were used anywhere during the panel replacements, our Minor had a 'back to bare metal' respray 18 years ago and was treated with a 'stonechip' type paint before the colour coat underneath and inside the wings. They also used a seam sealer on all external and internal seams.

In January 2016, after almost 18 years, I completely dismantled the car for various reasons ahead of a total respray, but not 'bare metal' this time.

The car is stored in a dry, frost-free garage, and is rarely used when there is salt on the roads, but other than that is used in all weathers and road conditions. Just spent 2 weeks in Ireland driving on some really bad roads, but the scenery really makes up for them!

I knew that the underside was in a very clean state after 18 years / 55,000 miles, with only some surface rust where the stonechip had been blasted away, but what I didn't know was what I would find inside the sills, behind the wings etc.

I was amazed to find clean paintwork everywhere! Says a lot for good preparation and applying stonechip to a well prepared surface.
