Temp sender housing

Post by BarryK »

Hi, I'm trying to find a housing/adaptor to fit in the cylinder head near the thermostat. At the moment there is a blanking plug, my idea was to remove that, fit an adaptor & sender for a temp gauge, failing that, any other ideas on where to fit the sender. I've looked on esm, bull & charles Ware. Another option I'm toying with is to remove the plug & try to drill & tap to fit the sensor
Any thoughts??
Thanks
Barry

They seem to have the adaptors at Holden, http://www.holden.co.uk/displayproducts ... E+Fittings
Do you have a "non standard" sender unit?
I would think the reason the usual suppliers don't do them is because they only supply the "standard" range of senders for the engine.

The thread in the head is 5/8" UNF, so you will need an adaptor with a 5/8" UNF male thread and a 1/8" NPT female thread - both are parallel threads.

The standard Mini type water temperature gauge sender was 5/8" UNF, but many of the aftermarket senders are 1/8" NPT. Have not seen an adaptor available yet - has anyone?

If you are anywhere near Oxford, I can drill and tap the blanking plug 1/8" NPT for you.

Hi Richard
VERY Kind of you! sadly Bergerac is a little too far
I have seen a tap on ebay I was thinking of buying & having ago, alternatively moss has a 5/8" sender for a fiver, do you think that would work with an elec gauge & then I just put the sender that was sent into stock!!
Thanks

It's a gamble - and then you need to consider if the gauge needs to be fed from the 10 volt regulated supply...Thye usually do - if you want an accurate reading.

Hi all,

I plan to fit a temperature sender with a Smiths temp gauge on my Minor 948cc 1957, which does not have the sender hole on the engine block. Have spent 3 months searching and found a thermostat housing which has a pre-drilled hole to fit the sender unit, finally arrived today from Melbourne and I have the sender unit GTR101 from MOSS.

Both are 5/8" UNF but the sender seems to be a little long, when tightened, about 2 circles of the thread still sticks out. The thermostat housing hole as a tapered seat which fits well with the sender unit which also has a tapered seat, and the protruding "sensor" nozzle fits nicely into the housing as well.

I have not fitted or tested both of them yet, but would like to know if the fitment would be a problem for a leak? There's no point in placing a washer/gasket on top of the thread as it will not fully screw in, but will the tapered seat seal itself, sender and housing?

Regards,
Chris

If it was me I would drill the shoulder out in the housing and fit the sensor with ptfe tape on the thread.

Yes, considered that option. Another was trying the GTR108, at additional costs :-?
It looks like it has a longer neck without the tapered seat.

Maybe try a thin copper washer on the taper, it will deform to the right shape as it's tightened up.

That's a Mini one, Isn't it? The neck angles up quite a long way, IIRC. Might it not make life difficult to connect to the rad?

Rob,

I think it's the standard one for the A-series engine, the 1098cc has the sender hole in the engine block. The thermostat housing is the non-standard Minor item, but the seat tapers well on both.

Amgrave,

If I would go the drilling and ptfe route, would grounding be an issue? Note that this is a single wire unit.

Guys,

Found a solution, 5/8" UNF male to female adaptor. For £2.50 from MOSS, it's worth a try.

Thanks to all.

It should still be OK as the thread cuts through the PTFE so there should still be some electrical contact. Try drilling the shoulder down a little but not right through if it's a concern.
