Condenser

Post by Cyril »

Hi
How often should the condenser in the distributor be replaced?
I had one replaced three years ago when the diaphragm wore out and the car started kangarooing.
The mechanic said the old condenser was only functioning at 5%.
Thanks
Mark

Simple answer is 'only when it stops working'. They either work or don't, not usually any middle ground.

Most of my magnetos from the 1930s still have their original condensers fitted. Anyone saying one was only functioning at 5% was out of his depth, I would say.

How would he know it was 5% ?? The condenser should last pretty much 'for ever' - no need for regular renewal unless the points appear to be 'burning'.

Thanks Guys :D
That makes total sense now!
This was the mechanic who I stopped using because he told me my brakes could never be fixed amongst other things and who tried to "groom" the car off me.
Cheers :D

If you need a condensor, get one off the 'Distibutor Doctor'. They are properly made and very reliable.

Hi Mark,
Many recommend electronic ignition, but if you decide to stay with points then get the 'Doctor's' points as well as the condensor.
Cheers,

It's often suggested on here to get an electronic distributor then do the old one up and keep it in the boot for the one time you might need it or if you come across someone broken down.

Condensors do not need replacing as a service item, they are capacitors and should go on 'for ever'... old Lucas condensors, by their construction, are 'self-healing'.
