horn problem

Post by Bengaku »

Hi as title says im having a small problem with my horn ie it doesn't toot .im a novice so not sure what to do. I have checked the fuse its ok iam right in thinking the interior light works off the same fuse?Anyway looking at the horn itself its attached to the side of the engine bay on a block of wood? It has two wires attached to it brown and blue. Blue wire although attached to same loom as brown has been cut and left just wrapped around horn .on other side of horn there was a wire attached but wire has been cutnot sure if this was blue wire or not might have been a problem and someone just cut the wire to stop the horn. so any help would be greatly appreciated. One other piece of information the car has an alternator fitted so not sure how this might affect the horn also interior light doesn't work but bulb is ok but notice some corrosion on top of contacts .so hopefully someone genius outthere can help out a new guy to the moggy scene. Thanks for looking

There is a wiring diagram .. 3rd post down in the electrical section, easy to read and should help you with your problem. your wire colours do not match the diagram so not sure whats happened there. You are correct in that the interior light works off the same fuse, could be dirty/corroded connections. The horn has a constant power feed and is ground out when you press the horn button. Good luck.

Thanks for reply update information i gave found that the wire which was cut did work the horn but also had the effect of nothing else would work ie no wpiers, indicators, heater.checked interior light indeed it has corrosion so will get some sandpaper and clean them and change bulb hopefully that will solve the problem.

A small multimeter would come in handy, there not expensive, will show you where you have power .. or not. I used to print out a copy of the wiring diagram and take it out to the car, it soon becomes clear what each wire does. The previous owner may have done something, er, different. Mounting the horn on a block of wood for instance .. that's a novel concept. Keep at it, you'll soon have it sorted.

Funny you mentioned that the horn is mounted on wood .cleaned interior light fitting as it had corrosion but still has not sorted problem unless it has somthing to do with a faulty wire did use multi meter but aothough reading was up and down with different readings it went to 0.00 so im guessing that's not a good sign
