whats the difference?

Right here goes,
On ESM they sell 1098 reconditioned gearboxes and "high specification "gearboxes with around a hundred pounds difference, the high spec one being the dearest. So my query is , does anyone know what the difference is and is it worth the extra £100?

I would guess that the basic gearbox is lightly rebuilt with minimum of new parts, and the superior box built with more/better parts. Why not just ask them ? Do they both carry a guarantee?

It would be guesswork, more new parts maybe, give the company a call, that's the only sure way to find out.
