Can Champion N- 3 plug ?
Hi i have Champion N-3 plugs - Can you tell me - can use them for my morris minor 1000 - now i use NGK Bp6ES

the N3 are very soft plugs - no great harm I suppose, but they won't last long. No experience of the other make - I always used Champs.

any of the main suppliers , charles wares , esm ,bull motiff , mini spares all sell the correct plugs for a morris minor , just tell them what engine type you have .

N9Y is fine - but I'm sure you can get something equivalent in SR - no need to send overseas for spark plugs.

NGK BP6ES are absolutely fine for a Minor - just avoid the resistor version the BPR6ES.

I agree. I've used them in my Minors for the last 30years after a couple of faulty Champions. Never had a single problem with NGKs. Widely available and not expensive either.IslipMinor wrote:NGK BP6ES are absolutely fine for a Minor - just avoid the resistor version the BP6RES.

After problems with Champion and Bosch switched to NGK many years ago in all my cars without one problem including BU8H in my Minor now.

Likewise, I dropped Champion after learning the hard way about their thread cutting. NGK only.
Worth checking the gap which is pre-set at 33 thou at the NGK factory unless special order. Normal Minor gap is (I believe?) 25 thou and is the same thickness as the average human thumbnail.
I've not seen a surface discharge plug fitted to anything before. How does it compare to standard plugs?

Hi all
When I decided to blow my motor at high boost I researched and found an article by Eldrid Norman where he said "With a supercharged car under racing conditions and using a very 'worked over' motor, plug failure is usually symptomised by a series of violent backfires into the manifold. These explosions are caused by the hot electrode of the plug igniting the incoming charge from the supercharger". Not knowing what would happen to my motor I bought a set of BU8H plugs which are surface discharge plugs ie. no protruding earth electrode. When the dyno man was mapping the disy curve and setting the needle in the carb he could not stop knocking or pre-ignition at very high outputs even when retarding the timing. Then I suggested trying the BU8H plugs. Put them in and Bingo - no more knocking. Evidently the electrode of the conventional plug was glowing red hot causing detonation. He then proceeded to tune the motor as normal till he was satisfied with the 38.2 rear wheel Kw. at 6000 RPM. The plugs have done about 3000 miles without a sign of a problem nor having being touched. Bear in mind my boost pressure is a little over 15 PSI, (a bit over 1.0 bar ). Another possible advantage in using this type of plug is to eliminate having to position the ground electrode to take the guess work out of plug installation where combustion chamber and high dome piston clearance is critical. The other possible disadvantage is that these plugs are only made with a heat range of 8 which suits my motor. The gap between the centre electrode and earth is 0.060”
(about 1.5 mm.) about twice that used for conventional plugs. However using a Bosch GT 40 coil there has not been any problem.

Please Tell me what are the complains about Champion Plugs do you Have ? i mean why you tell champion not good - what are the problems that you faced with champion ? I use now champion N9yc copper plugs

Hi all
In the past Champion and Bosch have been subject to breaking down (miss firing) and requiring frequent cleaning and re-gapping. Have also had the top screwed terminal come loose from the ceramic insulator with Champion. Never had any problem with NGK. I also have had good reports on Denso but because NGK are so good I will stay with them.
