pros and cons of buying / owning a lowlight?

Post by Budgie »

Just thought I'd throw this one into the arena and see what comes back as I may be interested in one that is for sale but I'm a bit concerned about parts availability and it's sluggish traction / weak points. All advice greatly appreciated. :D

A pleasure to own, better built than later morris minors, made from thicker steel. Feel the weight of a later produced car boot lid then feel an MM lid or bonnet. Simpler electrics simple engine, same basic engine used by morris from 1934 until 1954. In good condition they will run at 55mph all day. Plenty of spares available some new and some second hand. :D

Ive had mine since 2007, bought as a project and gradually been doing the work while still driving it. Still needs a respray as its micro blistered all over.

Pros!

Great fun, a very different driving experience to a 1000 more like a pre war experience with better brakes. Fairly rare and everyone wants to see under the bonnet. Comfy seats! Much heavier steel when you are carrying out repairs.

Cons

Awful headlights, bit slower and my car doesnt really like going above 45 even after a rebuild/rebore. Capable of using everyday if you really wanted but

Regarding parts, ESM keep a good few items, club spares has somne other bits. Body panels are all different but many things can be adapted or repaired. Chrome is hard to find and rechroming is very expensive.

Once well sorted they are a really nice car to own, Im heading over to the National in mine this weekend, this pic was taken at the 208 rally in Stanford Hall :D[frame]Image[/frame]

Better seats, pretty dashboard, every journey becomes an adventure (Hills etc), every time you stop someone comes over to tell you about the one they used to have...etc...

There aren't many spares unavailable, so long as you've still got the original base parts. As mentioned, bootlids are different but also the boot catches are different and are slightly differently mounted. If you need to you can use a later complete assembly, though. I've manufactured Lowlight boot latch assemblies since I couldn't find any last year.

I'd say they rust less than later cars and will probably keep their value slightly better.

The dash board alone is what made me start a fund to get one, but the way prices go up i might just end up owning a dash bowrd to look at
