Which Distributor do I have?
Hi everyone!
I am new to the world of Morris Minors but have recently purchased a 1956 split screen which has the 1098cc engine fitted. I want to fit electronic ignition but as there are a few variants I need to establish which distributor I have. Is there an easy way to tell them apart as I can't see any marking on it?
Thank you in advance

Unless it's been changed, it'll be the Lucas 25d distributor. I recommend buying a complete electronic 45d from Powerspark though rather than fitting a kit to your distributor. I've had one on my car for about 18 months now with no problems and I've heard lots of good reports from other members.

2nd vote for the 45D http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/For-Morris-Mi ... D0uf_Sb2BQ

I have taken your advice and ordered a 45D kit. Thank you for your help!

Re: Which Distributor do I have?
I contacted accuspark to ask them why their 45d is cheaper than the 25d & which they would recommend for my 1966 minor 1098 and they said they would recommend the 25d as it's a better distributer than the 45d.

Did you ask how it's better and what the differences are? Better can mean many things.
Re: Which Distributor do I have?
How can it be better? The 45D is later improved design from Lucas - it IS the better dizzy. Maybe they are trying to shift unwanted 25D stock.... get the 45D.

Just to clarify, it wouldn't have been a 25d, it would have been a DM2 on that car originally, unless the engine change also included replacing the dizzy.James k wrote:Unless it's been changed, it'll be the Lucas 25d distributor. I must admit, I'm mor ethan a little dubious as to the merits of replacing a basic, simple, easy-to-repair system with a cheaply-made fully-electronic alternative, but perhaps I'm being pessimistic. i mean, far-Eastern electrical products normally provide trouble-free service for years, right?

I was assuming that it had the distributor that corresponded to the 1098 engine rather than the car. But yes, they could well have just transferred the old distributor over, I didn't think of that.liammonty wrote:Just to clarify, it wouldn't have been a 25d, it would have been a DM2 on that car originally, unless the engine change also included replacing the dizzy.James k wrote:Unless it's been changed, it'll be the Lucas 25d distributor. I too was dubious about these electronic dizzies - and for a long time urged people to stick with good old points etc. However - so many were/are having trouble with crappy points/condensers/rotors - and the Accu/Power dizzies are getting very good reviews and many happy customers, that I do think the pendulum has swung. It gets you a new unit with no wobbly shaft - new vacuum advance, the better 45D with larger cap and less tracking risk, and better 'cam' profile - and all new cap and leads. Seems to work well for most - but you do have to check the car is -ve polarity of course, although I do think they will 'make' you a +ve earth version if your head is stuck in the +ve earth sand.....
