Spitfire seems the sensible option if you have got one in the area doing nowt - low stalling speed, good visibility and most importantly good fun - and ever dependable in a crisis.... if the worse had come to it, the pilot could have slid back the canopy, flown underneath and manualy pushed the nosegear forward to lock it!

Lancaster Vid can be pre-ordered now but I gather there has been a delivery delay but they are promising them for Christmas - nice way of letting the turkey go down.............

Watched this programme in the repeats - fantastic airplane, but completely ruined by the idiotic antics of the dreadful Guy Martin. Oh dear - would have been SO much better with James May - or Jeremy Clarkson.

Glad you enjoyed at least part of it, Roy. Bet you (like me) are jealous of Mr Martin and wish you had been given the opportunities that he has been lucky enough to get - odds on us getting to fly in anything like a Spitfire, a Lancaster or a Vulcan are precisely zero. I look on the bright side - at least I've got two Moggies to play with (three if you count the three-wheeler)!

They certainly wouldn't have let Clarkson anywhere near the Vulcan's mechanics. I remember a programme where Clarkson couldn't even put a car seat in properly - OK he was probably larking around for the camera. He's a presenter whereas Guy Martin demonstrated he had the mechanical knowledge to actually work on the Vulcan which earned him the respect of her Ground Crew!

They didn't even let Clarkson close to an Airfix kit - they gave the job of making the Spitfire to James May!

i think the things with clarkson are all set up and scripted , hes done a few history programes and comes accross as a clever man , i would not mind being a pound behind him , whatever people think . i dont think its the end of the vulcan , ive heard rumours that they are trying to get heritage status for the aircraft , with vts doing the maintanance , watch this space .

As far as I could see - Martin was only 'holding the spanners'...... He hasn't a clue.....
