The original headliner in my 1957 Moggy 1000 is badly torn not by me I would never allow that to happen it was like that when I bought it. Anyway I have a 1966 saloon that has a much better original one that I am removing to replace with a new one, as that car is going to be a wedding car.
I will get to the point in a minute!! My question is would I be able to fit the headliner from my 1966 saloon into my Moggy 1000?
Is your 1957 car a 1957 manufacture, or a 1957 registration of an earlier build? Check the size of the rear windows and number of hoops in the roof lining. If they are the same, then the liners should be interchangeable. If the earlier car is a 57 reg of earlier manufacture then there might be differences. The other change around that time was between fabric and PVC liners, but unless you're going concours then nobody would ever know
I will check the measurements, my car was registered in February 57 but yes could be an earlier build. Not going concours she is our regular moggy. I am wanting to retain her character and that smell! so I really want to avoid having to fit a brand new one if possible.
Yes I will have to be very careful I think it is going to be a tricky process I will let you know how I get on.
I don't see any reason why it cannot be done but it is quite a tricky job. You'll have to remove the complete headlining from both cars still fitted to the hoops. Generally this is done by removing the rear screen first although it IS possible without. You'll need to remove the lower part of the headlining (beneath the rear window) first and trace the wire tensioning cables which run from front to back, undo them and remove them still attached to the headining as well. The hardest bit is often releasing the two clips which secure the front of the headlining under the header rail.....
You'll probably have to remove the headlinings complete from each car. Then fit the better lining to your older car and then fit the new material to the supports from the older car before fitting this to the 1966 car. Hope that makes sense? Don't try to remove the material from one frame to fit to another. It'll be much easier to fit the whole lot. If you try to do this without removing the rear screen, your fingers will be sore afterwards
I found fitting a brand new headlining quite a job although it did come (from Newton Commercial) with good instructions. I wouldn't be in a hurry to do another although perhaps it would be easier a second time?
Manyminors that is so helpful to me many thanks! I did think that I would be better to remove them complete and then swap the 66 liner into the 57 as a whole unit. So we are on the same wavelength there.
My new one is from Newton commercial, I am really not looking forward to this and I am so cross that someone was so careless with her in the first place as to tear what was a perfect liner when I sold her 12 years ago. She has been abused and it's my fault for selling her I had looked after her so well. Grrrrr
Well my very talented upholsterer has said that he will try to fit the headlining from my 1966 2 door saloon into my 1957 4 door 1000 saloon, he said it can be done ( he has successfully transferred them in the past) but added that he can't guarantee that it won't tear as it could be brittle due to age, which I fully understand but fingers crossed!! I really didn't relish the task myself!
This should happen within the next month as he is quite busy with other work including currently upholstering the seats from my 2 door saloon.
I will report back on this issue in due course, am I going to be a happy customer? or is it all going to end in tears? Stay tuned for the next instalment as I know you all are gripped!!
