Removing and fitting valve guides

Post by philthehill »

Taking on board Les's idea of a spacer fitted over the top of the valve guide to give consistent heights of the valve guides I made a spacer and top cap and it is now easy to get the valve guides all at the same and correct height above the valve spring seats

That's a good idea, I will try that next time I do that job using a bit of thick walled pipe cut and ground to the correct length. :D

Phil-very nice! I was also thing of making a similar tool. Do you have a drawing on that as there is no point re-inventing the wheel.

Declan
No drawing just turned up the parts from what I had to hand.
The mandrel large dia is 11mm dia x 75mm length and is based on the standard BMC valve guide removal tool with the spigot 7.14mm max dia plus an extra 5mm to give a spigot length of 30mm.
The spacer is 13.72mm in height x 29mm O.D. with a I.D. of 12.5mm and is made to suit the 1300cc cylinder head.
The height of the spacer for a small bore engine should be 15.1mm - all other measurements are the same.
The cap is 28mm dia x 6mm thick. with a 7.5 mm dia hole at its centre..
Before using this tool I used to set No: 1 & No: 8 valve guides and used a straight edge to bring the top surface of each remaining guide into line with the top surface of No: 1 & No: 8 valve guide.
Now it is easy and more like a production line process :D

Never had any problems with a straight edge - just do the inlets, and then the exhausts. Simples!
