Proving age for tax exemption

Post by IaininTenbury »

Hi all,
I know this is the wrong forum for this enquiry but I was here so thought I'd ask. I need to tax a Transit that hasn't been on the road since 1993. It was first registered in Oct 74, though the chassis plate clearly gives a build date of 1973 - I assume it spent a while at the motorcaravan converters, then waiting to be sold hence delay in registering.
I know if it was a Moggy, I'd get the Heritage Certificate or a dating letter from Gaydon, but not sure about Fords, having never dabbled with the blue oval before...
cheers

I had to do this earlier in the year to get my classic Ford taxed as historic... I sent an email to taxfree@ford.com and they replied asking for some details etc.. Then they sent me a headed letter to send to the DVLA to prove the car was built in Dec 74.
It went through fine so now I don't have to pay....

Thanks for that. Not got round to joining the Transit Club yet. Sort of felt I was in enough car clubs, but was going to see them at Gaydon for the Classic Van Rally in a few weeks. Bit in two minds wether this one will be staying yet, but had a nice drive this evening in it (up and down the drive...).
Will try taxfree@ford.com thanks. Sounds promising, and I haven't even had to join a Ford forum yet!

Come and say hello to me! I will eithet be with one of my transits or the morris cowley (pre war) pickup I am also taking.

The transit van club is one of the few clubs endorsed by ford - BUT they arn't affiliated with the DVLA. You will need to get one of the ford clubs that are to authenticate the build date... or you could just try writing to the DVLA yourself and see what they say?

I'll look out for you Matt. I'll probably be having a trade stand there of some description. Probably not with the Transit, the way its going. Just removed one of the fibreglass rear corners to repair a split and found quite a bit of wood rot in the rear framework. (its a coachbuilt camper in case it wasn't clear from the description there!). Could be done in time if I had no other work to do... :-?

The enquiry to Ford was going well with a real person replying, but just had a standard email now explaining how to go about registering a new vehicle... Will try again with them. If I paid that £80+ charge I might as well just pay the road tax till next year! Will carry on trying - I'd like to get it on the road this summer!

Try and find Peter Lee at gaydon or send him an email? (You may have to join the TVC at £20 though)

Peter@transitvanclub.co.uk.

He has contacts within Ford who should be able to sort you out.

P.S I am looking for a few bits for the '28 Cowley if you have anything or know of anyone with bits? (Big bits are silver faced speedo and dashboard lamp (think its a d20)

Isn't the registration date of Oct 74 now early enough for it to be registered as tax exempt?

Er yes, I understand it is now. Probably not goingto be on the road this season now anyway given the work required. May as well go through it all and paint it whilst it has a space in the workshop. I was hoping to get it MOTd and have a couple of trial outings with it before the winter...
I did join the Transit Club and had a very good day at Gaydon anyway even though it was with Land Rover and caravan rather than Transit :-?
