Door seals - bottom or inside?

Post by oilypaws »

My 1963 4-door has a channel along the underside of the door which looks like it is supposed to take a rubber seal, but it has not been used, at least not since the last repaint job (probably 20 years ago). The doors had another seal clipped to the bottom of the inside face on a row of holes. You can see the channel and the line of holes where the seal was in the attached photo.

As you can see, the bottom of the door was rusted out and I had to remove (and basically cut to bits) the channel when rebuilding the door.

I see the channels can be bought from ESM, as well as a variety of seals. Did they change from a seal on the bottom to a seal on the inside face at some point (so the bottom channel is a redundant legacy)? Or should I have both? It would be a lot easier if I didn't have to replace the channel section... ;o)

Afternoon all,

Question about same bottom channel. Fixing my doors currently and I'm not doing it up for concours or entirely original either, does this bottom channel and seal actually do anything major or can I just miss it out?

Cheers!
