Misfiring tale of woe... Answer known...

Post by Piston broke »

I have the solution to this one, but just wondered if, for a bit of fun, you could guess the cause?

Each morning I'd start my car, and pull away from my drive and as I headed up the slight hill into the village, Miranda (the Morris) would begin to misfire, and loudly backfire, causing horses to bolt, pregnant women to go into labour and the elderly to seek an Anderson shelter. After frantically pulling at the choke, the problem seemed to rectify itself and the rest of the journey could be continued in relative peace. This issue often happened at the very beginning of my journey. One day, the issue occurred half an hour later, as I arrived at work. The engine banged to a stall- and could not be restarted....... Until the issue discovered....

What would YOUR guesses be.....

No. it wasn't the amount or flow of fuel... Although I had that as my first line of enquiry too...

It's got to be electrical, the rotor arm or condenser. After all it can’t be the coil can it

A couple of you pretty much got the nail on the head. Well done!

It was the poor quality of the condenser! Only a few months old, the wire was not properly soldered on to the connector and this would cause errant earthing to the distributor body. This was found easily due to great old skool AA man and fact car was in a dark shed at work and the spark was obvious.

Moral of the story, even the basic parts are now being made in a shoddy way and can have a major impact, hence I'm now electronic ignition ( ok, tape first one supplied didn't work, but that's a different thread...!).

Worth checking and re soldering.
