Wingmirror glass

Post by herclepercle »

Hi all,

I'm trying (and failing) to locate some replacement glass for the o/s wingmirror (don't have a n/s one anyway!).
It's a Desmo style. It has no glass at all at present, so manoeuvring is a bit hairy at times. I have been to that well known orange logo car stuff retailer (don't know if we can name companies) but no luck. Is it a case of getting one cut? Or is there somewhere that will have the glass? I don't really want to buy a new one as my money has more important places on the car to be spent.

Thanks in advance

I managed to get a spare glass for my Desmo mirror recently. I can't remember who from but just google "desmo mirror Morris Minor"?

Just went to my local 'old fashioned' glass merchant and he cut a new mirror glass using the removed Desmo head unit (simply undo the nut on the end of the arm) as the pattern for just a 'few quid' .
Check the nylon type surround beading that was designed to hold in the glass as they break down and crack over the years .
The Desmo also has a large spring (of industrial strength :x )that held the glass out against this surround beading with some force.
I did a successful 'invisable' fix with existing the black nylon surround beading that only luckily had one crack in it : -
backed the glass with a block of polystyrene foam cut to size and thickness then bedded back the black nylon surround with a little black windsrceen sealant Job done good as new and all o.k. for me, for months and months so far

The new glass I bought did come with a new plastic retainer as well. As stated above these do tend to break over time. I expect the spring is available as well if you need it.

Thanks for all your responses - I went to the local autofactors today who put the Reg in, and promptly said "nope, you'll have to contact the owner's club". As I live fairly close to the glass quarter (Stourbridge) I may go up there to get some cut.

Regarding attaching it, could I not just use some strong glue?

I saw a plastic mirror for sale which can be cut to shape with scissors and stuck on. It was only a coupe of pounds. Can't remember where though, sorry.

For the best and most comprehensive rearward view you really want convex glass, much safer.
