Hi all

First of all, apologies if there is a "saying hello" forum I have failed to find.

So after about 6 months of perusing the small ads and the usual online suspects, plus a couple of convincing episodes of wheeler dealers and a tax rebate, I have bought a 1957 4 Door Morris Minor.



She's all together in pretty sound mechanical shape, but there are some bits and pieces which I'd like to tidy up. So far an alternator and some more modern seats have arrived, which I'll no doubt tell you guys all about.

I'll put it in my profile soon but I'm based in Birmingham, hoping to make in to a Bromsgrove meet at the start of next month.

First job, get it immobilised or a secret switch. Welcome to the club and the forum search engine is a great place to start for any little problems.

Why are you fitting an alternator - has the dynamo failed ?? The car needs to be -ve earth for an alternator... Don't get me wrong - it is a good idea if you do a lot of 'traffic'....but there has been a rash of useless alternators on the market recently. Hope yours is a good one !

The dynamo did 'work', in that with nothing else drawing power she would charge.

When I first drove her back from getting here is was gloomy and raining, so I had wipers and (halogen) headlights on, and for a while the heater blower to keep the screen clear. Drove solid for about 30 minutes before having to stop start through town, and everytime I did stop everything dipped and didn't work.

I don't want to upset any purists, I feel horrible taking things off her, but I can't live with that day to day, she will soon be my only can, I can't rule out driving because it's dark and wet.

Just got the alternator fitted, putting in a good voltage. Looking for somewhere clever to mount the coil!

Mounted upright to the rear of the offside inner wing is a good place.

As space was a bit tight I utilised the old dynamo bracket to mount it on the inner wing

At present I don't have a fresh air hose in the way to worry about, heating system is a fair cobble of bits and pieces I need to put straight.

Just read another thread on here about stopping the coil getting wet (puddle splashing) when mounted lower down, I think I will mount it on upright on the wing and then perhaps fabricate a simple splash guard.

Never had any bother with 'splashing' - the important thing is to keep the coil away from the heat and vibration of the engine - and possibly also away from the AC magnetic field surrounding the alternator ! It's likely that all your dynamo needed was the fan belt tightening.... Well done with the alternator - you must be one of the lucky ones, to get an alternator that actually works straight out the box !
