Post by estepona1999 »

Can someone tell me about the rear seal on my ribbed case gearbox.I have bought a new one,is it a difficult job to change the seal? Do I need any special tools to change it? Thankyou

The workshop manual quotes a tool, I just twisted the old one off with a set of Stilsons and put the new one on, not to difficult, didn't need any special tools.

Should probably mention this was using a NOS rear seal - can't vouch for new ones being as straight forward to fit!

The one I just purchased from BM went on a treat.

Be careful getting the old one off, don't be tempted to get too heavy handed with a big hammer, you can tap it off but remember there is a fair amount of ally casting that the seal fits over and it would be very easy to break it.

The case of the seal is crimped over in a couple of places, the crimping pushes some of the metal into a recess in the aluminium tailpiece, which in turn prevents the seal pulling straight off. Carefully grinding the crimp away will free it. Otherwise, as above, the aluminium will break if the crimps are left.
