It's MOT exempt, so could in theory be taxed as is but the chances are when it came to removing the reg, DVLA would demand an inspection.

More worrying than dodgy number sales is the possibility that the buyer might use the identity to disguise a stolen car.

More worrying than dodgy number sales is the possibility that the buyer might use the identity to disguise a stolen car.
And that is the most worrying aspect of this.
It is, however, sometimes a shame that registrations can't be retrieved from 'dead' cars, in a way that registers the car as scrap and therefore renders its identity defunct, thus preventing the above from happening, whilst allowing the actual number plate to live on (I for one would love to lay claim to my parents cars registration for sentimental reasons).
Anyway I think this needs flagging up to someone, any policemen on this site??
Best wishes,
Mike.

NOT so ,matter not if its exempt, the regs are clear(Been discussed many times) To transfer a regs requires that the vehicle must be MOT,and taxed in the last 6 months or shown to be tax exempt ,it has to be shown that it was on the road ie insured taxed ,etc . they don't examine like they used to back in the day when you could use an old motor cycle frame or tractor ,take it on a trailor to the local office and have the number transfered .Did that twice back in the sixties . :D Have a look at the regs on dvla site. The reg was left in place when exemption came in to prevent exactly this situation.

Surely if it was as early a 1957 it would be a "rare LBM" shell

Whatever it is, it's TAXED according to the DVLA

Consult "Dating Minor's by Richard T.Diom"!

Looked via large screen, NO LBM - so 1957 to early 1959
