Do's and don'ts for starting a recon engine first time?

Post by Theo_NL »

I'm almost there to start my reconditioned engine for the first time. What are the "do's and don'ts"?
Any advise on running-in, first oil change, etc?

Oil in the bores - crank it again to get the oil pressure up and start it! Retorque the head (44 ftlbf) and reset valve gaps after the first heat cycle. Oil change at 500 miles should be fine! Just don't thrash it till then......

Oil in the bores - yes. But plugs out and lots of rag to stop the oil squirting everywhere. (Been there!). I was surprised how quickly the oil light went out on mine.
