New harness

Post by seriesmm »

Hi guys,
I am undertaking a full restoration of a 56 series 2. I have decided (1 year ago) to replace the wiring harness with a new "original style" harness from Autosparks. I carefully labelled the old harness as I removed it.
The new harness uses different colours and when I called Autosparks I was told they use BS standard wire colours and I've downloaded their colour description but it still doesn't really help me since the colours are different from the original loom. Argggh!
Can any one help please? Also the new harness seems shorter than the original and I see no wiring for the traficators and I'm not sure the wiring will reach all the rear lights. Very frustrating. Any help or advise will be gratefully received.
Btw I called Autosparks who were not much help. They even said the colours would possibly be different from the originals! What use is that?
Thanks
Mark

Maybe it's the wrong harness....if it doesn't have wires for the Trafs ? I wouldn't worry about the colours - that can be easily sorted out.

Mark,

That does not sound like Autosparks at all. I used them 17 years ago to rebraid our harness, including many additional wires, and they could not have been more knowledgeable and helpful.

Their website shows harnesses for each year of the Minor and even the chassis number range each one covers - how can they then turn round and defend what sounds more like a generic harness?

I do not understand it - you are talking about Autosparks in Nottingham??

I have found Autosparks very helpful, even over the phone when sorting out non standard wiring for accessories. As said, check that you have the correct loom, they check the chassis number against the BMIHT records for car model, so if BMIHT records are incorrect, as mine were, then you can end up with problems. I still seem to have a couple of extra wires.
The usual problem is that with the old fabric covered looms every colour is black, which is why I ordered plastic covered wires so that I will still be able to identify them in ten years time. Lay the loom out on the floor and you should be able to identify most of the wires and connections.
Keep the old harness, you never when you are going to need a length of blue with green.
