Replacing air filter

Hi,
I'm trying to replace the air filter in my traveller. I really seems like it ought to be a very easy job but I can't get the air filter open to change the element. I've removed it from the carb by undoing the wingnut but I can't get the two parts apart to get inside. Is there any knack to separating them? I don't want to force it and break it.

There isn't really a trick, just fits into the base by the lip. Grab the intake tube firmly, and give the housing a good 'tap' with the palm of your hand (be ready to catch it if it goes). Should see it right. Sometimes, if it has not been replaced in a while, the oil from the breather can cause the filter to stick to the base, but should slip off easily when prompted.

Watching one of those 'How Its Made' sections on Discovery channel ( or whatever ) , one covered (USA I think , Fram filters - folded paper and a sort of neoprene top and bottom sections, all just about automated), the problem I have is the 948 Filters , although listed as same part number as the 1098s, in the 'squarer' air filter housing of the 948 the modern elements dont quite fit nicely, anyone got a good nos Unipart stock that might fit better than my local motor factors ?

I managed in the end. I went round the join with a stanley knife then prised it open with a screwdriver.

It's a bit late to tell you now, but mind out that you don't break the nozzle (which is a convenient lever for holding on to) off the filter housing when you're brutalising the parts apart from one another. It's a pain having to weld it back on, and it's amazing how much induction roar you get when it's broken off!
