Those ebay ones aren't significantly more than a standard headlight bulb. If I still did a lot of winter commuting I'd be tempted to give them a try as they'd also give the dynamo as easier life.
My friend designs/builds these ones. They'd make a great pair of spots for road use ;)

VERY fancy....and not inexpensive I guess... I would have expected them to show some pics of the lights 'in action' on a dark road compared to 'ordinary' lights.

Well - they LOOK bright all right - but I meant shining up a dark road to demonstrate the light path....
