Tools?

Post by poplars »

Suddenly had a thought . Some of you will have seen Im going to have a go at mending the doors on my Morris. Ive had a look at a very useful video online showing how to take them off the body of the car. I suddenly had a thought. Will I need an imperial socket set????

Answer yes.
The Minor is a mixture of AF sockets/ spanners for most of the engine parts and Whitworth sockets / spanners for the rest.
There is a helpful list of spanner sizes at the top of the Mechanical Section of the Forum. Not cpmprehensive but at least it's a start.

Given the age of the vehicles some fixings may have never been removed before ...so a can or aerosol spray of PlusGas dismantling fluid is a very useful addition to the tool kit.
A previous owner may have substituted a metric nut and bolt in some places so don't automatically assume it will be " as it left the factory " !!

Autojumbles are good place to pick up good second hand tools at a reasonable price, as well as dear old Ebay

Boot fairs are another source of imperial tools and much cheaper than auto-jumbles.
Look for the words chrome vanadium, this means good quality.

"DROP FORGED INDIA" is NOT!

Also have GordonTools,Snailbrand,Leyland - 3 of the latter courtesy of Black
& White Leyland Royal Tiger's - all in my tool box.

As for sockets, 24point not those cheapo 6point things - best to have a set
of 3/8 & 1/2 drive bsf/ww.
Further investigations uncovered it was an inside job!!

Not to remove the doors, IIRC the cap screw heads are 1/4 Whitworth.

My (colonial) understanding of Imperial is inch size, like 1/2" or 9/16". Looking at a chart I see 1/4 Whitworth is .525" which is definitely Imperial although it's not an "inch" size.

Just different lingo. My apologies.
