Just got to the stage of fitting the closing panels under the front rail and I'm a little stuck at to what to do with the remaining hole. Is this square hole in the front rail usual - I'm guessing it is. Is it just blocked up using caulking?

This should be covered by the closing panel which fits under the timber sill...Unfortunately the ones now supplied dont have the correct upstand in this area....
A small plate could be fitted under the mudguard and bedded in seam sealer...
and this is how the plate will be attached. Please note that it is increadibly badly fitting at the moment as I am literally just holding it in place to show you. The chassis and closing plate should align more neatly than the photo shows, but I'll have to do some minor surgery on either/or for this to happen, so at the moment this pic is a little misleading. Basically, the gap between the chassis and plate wont be there. Clear as mud?[frame][/frame]
Thanks Russ for taking the pics thats really helpful, Taupe has a number of posts on here regarding the panels its becoming a bit more clear. Regarding the first pic could you not drill through the car body and screw into the wood to close the gap? Did you have to cut out a slot in your front wings to slot them in? will you weld or not? I know some people do and others dont, mind you as soon as you weld them on they become part of your MOT. However if you dont weld them MOT inspector may question why they are not fixed. Others have fitted them after there inspection to avoid the problem ? Have you got any thoughts?

As the panels are only a few quid each I would rather trim them, if any trimming is required, rather than any part of the chassis. If I knew they were going to fit so poorly when I bought them I wouldn't have bothered, I would simply have made my own that would have fitted much better. The small lip at the front that stands vertically is far too short, so the remaining hole (that was the reason for my first posting) will still have to be covered by something. I'll screw them on and seal around them with the same sealer I used for the front wings. No welding.
thanks for this informatiom it is very helpful mine have still not gone on but soon this will happen did you spray your car before the wood replacement? I have many jobs todo with the car.
Then wood added (including ali side panels). Roof and gutter added once all the wood, including rear doors were in position. (roof was primed at this stage, but no top coat). Once the roof and gutter are nailed on, the rear section is sprayed. The 'T' rubber between cab and roof is added at the very last stage, after all painting, believe it or not and is an absolute nightmare to get in.
