if this is a constant issue, to save banging at it with a hammer and chisel every time (not that i'll be doing it every week), are there easy remove caps or are they all the same?

ok cool guys, i'll have a go with the ole chisel and if i'm still stumped i'll post some pics.

They really are very easy to remove - just tap tap tap and it will work out.

hi guys, I have had another go at the trunnions.
I have stripped the breaks off and now only have the backplate to take off, do I need to take the wheel bearings off to move the back plate far enough away from the king pin to unscrew the trunnion, at the moment there is no room to twist it off, but on the positive side I have removed the wheel dust cap, just didn't want to remove the bearings before I got some advice.

no need to touch anything on the brakes or back plates
you need to take out the trunnion pin by jacking up the thick wishbone ( as called by esm not me lol ) undoing the nuts either side and pull the pin out then take out the nuts holding the thin wish bone then pull that off then you can take off the lower trunnion
then put every thing back

Dennis - it's not standard suspension...... But I agree - the trunnion should turn ok once the pin is out.

If you must - remove the hub complete - DO NOT mess with 'bearings'. The hub should just tug straight off the stub axle. I fear you will get in terrible trouble if you get involved with bearings..... I've forgotten why you want to renew the trunnions now... it's dragged on so long! Have you ever got the pin and stepped washers out of the suspension wishbone? Some update pictures would help us understand what's going on...
