A couple more questions that hopefully, someone can enlighten me on. On the dipstick on my engine there is nothing to stop it at the correct height on the block to determine the level. I have found a hard rubber thick washer that is a very tight fit on the dipstick - can anyone tell me how far from the end it should go? I realize that I could measure the correct amount of oil into the sump and work it out from there, but having the measurement would save me from the wrath of She Who Must Be Obeyed when the kitchen measuring jug is found to smell of oil - and the flywheel starter ring has yet to go in the oven.......
The crankshaft pulley lock washer has a female cut out, but the pulley fits flush with the end of the crank - meaning that there is nowhere for the cut out to locate. When I removed the starter nut, the lock washer was just sitting there - neither located in the crank, or peened over on the nut. If it had a male tag that could locate into the keyway, I could understand it - but as it is, it has me baffled. Any ideas - other than loctight on the starter nut and dispense with the lock washer?

On 948 & 1098 engines, there should be a plastic tube that sits in the hole in the side of the block. It's almost like a very thin funnel, and the dip stick sits in that at the correct height; it should not go straight into the block. It's a long while since I worked on an earlier engine, but I suspect that a similar arrangement will exist there - someone else will be along shortly with the answer. It sounds to me as though your dip stick holder is missing, you should not need a band. There should also be a collar on the stick that rests on the holder, perhaps the collar is missing?

The lockwasher is knocked INTO the pulley, where a couple of scoops have been taken out of the metal, Then at the opposite end of the washer bend over a flat on the bolt. The dipstick will depend on what you have in situ at the point where it enters the block.

The dipstick Pt No: 2A294 on a 948cc Minor does not have any collar to limit its height it just drops straight through and the end just rests on the bottom of the sump.
Only on the later cars (1098cc) does the dip stick Pt No: 12G175 have a collar and is fitted into a plastic sleeve Pt No: 12G107.
As regards the locking of the starter dog yes it is as above. On my 1380cc engine I have a large washer and an Allen screw (Mini Spares Pt No: C-AHT147) replaces the starter dog. It is just torqued up - NO Loctite - No lock washer and it stays nice and tight with no problems at all.

As above re dipstick. On the lock washer - are you sure you have the correct washer - maybe it's meant for the cam sprocket? I always used Loctite on the crank bolt.

It appears then that the dipstick is original - there is no collar. The new lock washer was shown in the Moss catalogue as correct - it is the same as the one that came off - probably the same as the cam washer. I can now see how it will lock - it was the female cut out that was throwing me. I want to keep the starter handle nut - just in case. Once again, thanks to all.
