Back lights
Hi folks I'm having a bit of bother with my 1957 morris minor and was wondering can any one help me out , I am building my morris minor back together and the owner before me had added indicators to the front and back and I have now left it the way it should be with the original lights fitted , the front is fine all sorted but I'm having bother at the back ?
The back lights have the one double filiment bulb and I am getting my parking lights , indicators and brake lights but the 2 indicators are going at the same time or when I brake the indicator stays on on the side I have the indicator stalk on , it might be something simple but it's just not my strong point , any help would be great as I'm at a stand still at the minute , thank yous
Any other information or photos yous might need just let me know and I will be more than happy to help

Re: Back lights
Hi and welcome to the forum. If the previous owner had added indicators then the wiring is probably modified and not standard. Can you tell us what colour wires are in use at the back?

Re: Back lights
Hi thanks for the reply , I have 5 wires altogether coming into the boot !
Green / red & green /white which I get for indicators
Red for tail lights
Green / purple for brake lights
Green / black for petrol gauge
Getting power to all these !
It's when I join the indicators in with the brake light that every thing goes wrong !

Re: Back lights
You can't just 'join them in with the brake lights'! You need separate indicator lamps - OR - a very special relay box that separates them so the brake light can also 'flash'. It's not inexpensive - although someone will be along soon with the wiring diagram to make up your own using individual relatively inexpensive relays.

Re: Back lights
Thanks for the reply , I was wondering was there some sort of relay missing or needed because in theory it couldn't work , maybe the previous owner done away with the original relay after he hooked up the new indicators as he wouldn't have needed it ? Yea I'll wait and see if any one can come up with a relay diagram on how to solve my problem , thanks again

Re: Back lights
The relay you need is..

if you are lucky the last owner might not have removed it.. just not put the wiring through it, mine is mounted in the dash behind the glove box on the drivers side.

Re: Back lights
Thanks for the reply , no there is no relay under the dash as i had every thing striped to a bare shell , maybe we could be getting some were now !
Some one out there might have a picture or a wiring diagram on this to see what I would need to get ?
Thanks again , if there's something missing it I'll hardly work !
P/s I have fitted the slightly bigger parking lights to the front with the double filiment bulb and just wiried these up to the old indicator wires that was there , as in pictures[frame]

Re: Back lights
Nice looking minor, is it still in Northern Ireland?
This is the relay you need to work the brake lights as indicators
http://morrisminorspares.co.uk/shop/pro ... 5dddfe509c
It wasnt widely used until about 1961 so its unlikely yours had one fitted. Its normally fitted on the inner wing/flitch under the bonnet on the drivers side. I have a 1963 minor with this lighting arrangement.
A good alternative to to fit indicators under the back bumper, you can also wire your semaphores in to work with the indicators using a flasher unit on each side.

Re: Back lights
Thanks for the reply , do you know how they worked the lights before this box was used , don't think this was ever fitted to mine as the wiring loom is not for this box , my father has a 61 minor with this box but his loom is different , yea car is now in southern Ireland , in Donegal , thanks again for your advice
Re: Back lights
'Before the box' - the cars only had Trafficators. The flashing brake lights were a BIG step forwards! Trouble is - today's drivers may not understand what a flashing brake light means. I would fit separate orange flasher lights - possibly under the bumper as suggested so they are only obvious from behind.
