Oil additives

Post by davidpidge »

Hello.

Our 2001 1.0L Yaris makes an annoying and quite loud 'put put put' sound which it developed last year. I thought it was exhaust fumes puffing out from the barely-holding-on exhaust manifold which has corroded beyond recognition. Annoyingly, even 2nd hand manifolds in terrible condition sell for around £60-£100 on ebay! So in case the noise is something else (tappets etc.) I was going to start pouring additives in! I've already tried a bottle of hydraulic valve lifter un-sticker stuff but no results. I'm looking for something else possibly called oil supercharger? Apparently this changes the viscosity of the oil and helps it get to places. Can you tell I know what I'm talking about?

Anyway......Can you add too many additives to the oil? Are their problems with adding these additives?

I definitely wouldn't recommend any additives in engine oil. Change the oil annually or every 6000 miles and use a good branded 10w40 semi synthetic engine oil. Are the tappets in that engine hydraulic/self adjusting. If not then they probably need adjusted, if that is what the noise is.

I would suggest that the proper cure would be a new manifold, or have the existing one repaired, before you go wasting your money on snake oil remedies that may cause more harm than they cure.

Hi

Do you find this is more on tickover?

Have you tried cleaning the throttle body and Maf sensor under the air filter box?

Common problem on the yaris. Best is to remove the throttlebody of the car and clean with carb cleaner or equivalent.

Also check the clutch cable for free movement - can cause a very annoying rattle
