Will do. I'll get to it next week and I will have sorted out my battery charger then too as it also blew a fuse.

OK, great..it's been a while but I finally got the engine to fire up...it was a problem with the points. BUT, the engine roars and turns over really fast so that it gets red hot v. quickly.

So far I have replaced the needle in the carb and played about with the tick-over screw and checked the accelerator cable and choke but it seems more findamental to me.

Any ideas anyone? :)

Yes there was an air leak but the manifold is all tight now. Still runs way to fast though, do you think I should replace the carb?

MAKE SURE the throttle is fully closed - and the 'choke' OFF., Is the fast idle screw on the 'choke' maybe holding the throttle open??

Hi, OK some progress now but the engine is still way too fast and the exhaust glows red hot. I have disconnected the choke cable from the carb and the throttle cable too for now.

How might I slow things down even further as the fast idle screw is all the way out.

It is getting exciting now!! :D

Glowing exhaust is often sign of seriously retarded ignition timing. Advance it! There must still be air getting in...servo pipe open? Any other unused ports- block them! Was anything done to the carb - is it possible the throttle plate is fitted wrong way round.....?

Many thanks, retarding the ignition sorted it! Over the weekend, I can re-assemble bits and bobs and may be reverse carefully out of the garage! Thanks again. :P

Retarding? I would have thought ADVANCING was required.... But as long as it's now working... :)

I was going to reverse the car but the accelerator cable appears to have no effect on the rate of tick over. Do you think the problem might be a blocked carb? :(

Have you tried moving the cam on the carb that the cable is attached to by hand Tim?
If that works your cable is likely at fault .

Is the carb piston rising and falling freely?
