I have found Halfords useless when I went there to see if they had any radiator hoses as the top one had split on my MG Midget and the nearest hose they could come up with was one you washed your car with or watered your garden. So I just walked out laughing.

I once asked them for something and had to give my registration so they could get the correct part for me, then they said their records didnt go back that far

I went into my local Halfords a couple of years ago and asked for a fan belt to fit a Morris Minor.

After searching through 3 parts manuals without success he coyly asked me, " is that a car sir? "

I took some cellulose paint to them a few weeks ago, to ask if they would use it to fill a spray can for me, the guy behind the counter said he didn't see why not and set about doing it, when enquiring how much I owed he said ' how does a couple of pounds sound' ? Terrible place isn't it. :D

Now that IS good! But I think you were v lucky!! That was down to the local staff providing a service, whereas the decision to not carry fan belts etc etc will be a 'head office' decision.

You go to any place now, apart from a Minor specialist, and you don't get the parts, because minors are old bangers and in fairness how can you stock for every car that has ever been made? Annoying yes. They don't stock plugs for a 1907 Rover either. :D

I disagree... most motor factors will have most of the service parts in stock or will have them within a few hours

That's my experience - and I do know that if Hellfrauds don't have the item, and 'get it in' - they get it from the Autoparts place 200 yds up the road! Go there in the first place, wearing overall/grubby hands - and ask for a discount. 9 times out of 10 you will get it!

In defence of Halfords.
I purchase quite a few item from our local, as long as you don't have to ask the youngsters that work there the service is good. The youngsters probably are a lot better than me at blue tooth thingies and very large stereos, they are also very capable at changing the light bulbs in BMW cars while the owner pretends its not his car until the job is done.
I can understand why they don't cater for the average Morris owner, we generally very unhappy to open our wallets (don't know if this link will work, sometimes you have to register and even pay for reading it).

Another interesting link I found is:
http://www.howmanyleft.co.uk/about

Getting back to Halfords I am considering purchasing some of this:

SIP ADVANCED COMPRESSOR OIL EXTRA INFO
Specialist Compressor Oil (SAE40 equivalent)
Specially designed for use with the SIP range of air tools and compressors
Low carbon forming tendencies
Resistant to oxidation up to 220C
Conforms to VC-L of DIN 51352 & DIN 51506 standards
1 Litre

I would like a smaller amount but the price is good and would have loads left over even after changing oil in the dampers of both my vehicles (your dampers would continue working after the car caught fire).
