Fuel pump

Post by gavinbishopuk »

I've been having problems with the fuel pump. I Have cleaned the points, and things have improved, but it still stops occasionally and the car stalls - until I get out and tap the side of the pump! Is it better to replace the pump or to replace the contacts with an electronic kit?

I'd try a little dab of thin oil on all of the pivot pins for the contacts, they might have tightened up over the years, or fit a new breaker mechanism. Second, check you have the right supply voltage at the pump - it should be the same as you measure across the battery. There's no need to go electronic if your pump is well maintained, they are generally very reliable.

Clean and reset the points again, following the Workshop Manual procedure.....AVOID the electronic pump. If you don't have a BMC/Leyland Manual - Google for it! Free downloads are out there........ :D Best way to avoid pump problems is to pick up a spare one from ebay - as long as you have a spare with you, the car pump will not give the slightest bother...... :)

Thank you for the advice. I've only just cleaned the points!! Why should I avoid a electronic pump?

I appreciate you have just cleaned the points...obviously not correctly, or the pump would be working.... ! Hence the advice to do it again - and reset following the Manual procedure.

I wasn't being sarcastic - sorry if that appeared to come across in my post! Will clean the points again, and keep all fingers tightly crossed.

Gavin,

I don't think YOUR post is seen as sarcastic or rude in anyway.
