How much paint?

Post by chilly »

How many litres of paint would I need to buy to have a pick up painted. Erring on the high side so I've got some spare for touching up later.

The very fact you want to do 'touching up' later suggests the use of celly! It could be done with 2 litres of colour -but 3 will give you plenty for multiple coats and some left for future repairs.

Id get four litres if its having a full repaint, maybe five if you doing, engine bay, cab inside, door shuts, all of outside and rear floors and rear sides inside, they take a lot to paint esp around the support bars and trying to get all the edges etc.... depends on how much you painting.... a outside spray 3 litres and will have plenty to repaint the odd panel if needed and right colour match, repaint inc door shuts inside rear then 4 litres, 5 litres if doing everything inc engine bay and inside and underside of all the panels..

Yes, 4/5 litres is needed for a Moggie.

You want at least 5 or six coats to allow for wet flat and polish and some for when it goes a bit wrong!
Cheers John - all comments IMHO

It's expensive stuff -I stick with my original statement. I sprayed a Mini completely - inside and out (a brand new shell) with 2 litres of colour - yes many coats - and still had some paint left over. An extra litre for the roof which I wanted a different colour, as you do with a Mini! Think positive ! Don't plan for it to 'go wrong'.....or it will..........

The only problem, if you do run out, is getting more of the same shade, I've got 2.5 ltrs of Almond green but can't decide if I should chance it and maybe get half way through, then have to buy 5ltrs to go over it all again!

Worst situation - you would only need to buy 1 litre to put a finish coat all over......

I would buy five litres minimum.Enough for many coats which is necessary with cellulose as its so thin and you need a decent layer for finishing. As has been said you're then sure you have a bit left that is a guaranteed colour match. It's only £26 a litre of mixed colour from Jawel on EBay so not exactly expensive.I can remember years ago the cheapo £50 resprays that consisted of one coat of two pack.Very poor. One coat of celly wouldn't even hide the primer coat!
