Starter motor advice
I have to renew the starter bendix gear complete on my unit as the integral helical gear has 4 cracks in it ,my question please is I seem to remember that all the parts need to be really clean and all assembled including the separate sliding shaft helical gear completely dry ie no lubrication at all .Can someone please advise if this is correct or otherwise

NO oil/lubrication.
Absolutely correct.
Any dust from the clutch will attaché itself to the oil and the bendix assy will eventually stick.

You'll need to have (or make) a little spring compressor to do the job...... Like this ... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Compressor-Sp ... 2ecfc76425

Re: Starter motor advice
Remember that there is a lot of pressure stored in that short ( but very strong ) spring.Fast flying, small metal objects and the human body are not a good mix !!
If you are planning the DIY route .. .make sure the metal is beefy enough for the job ....as per Roy's E Bay example.

Thanks for the advice luckilly for me the starter on my car is the early type that has a threaded nut on the end so it was just a case of removing the split pin and undoing the nut until all the spring pressure was released ,on my spare starter it is a later type which has the C shaped collar and yes I was mindful of the spring pressure
