I totally agree with you in that the basics should be tried first but I would not discourage people from trying other ways/modifications.
I like to try modifications and ideas that I come up with to see how/they work out but it was not so good for me in this case. If it was that good it would still be fitted.
A well back to the drawing board & British Standards :D

Coils never need replacing,points never wear out,rear oil seal conversions are unnecessary,thats going to put a lot of people out of work.Phil you have a PM.

I don't agree that 'points never wear out' - of course they do! Just need a bit of fettling once a year !! And seriously - if oil is coming out the rear of the crank - there is a problem with the engine -and/or the breathers are not connected as they should be.......
