Number plates were issued by the car dealers, therefore the make and design was up to the dealer.
My 1952 car has raised aluminium characters riveted to the plate, it was incorrectly fitted with a squared cornered pate on the boot lid but since it has been fitted from new, I have no intention of changing it.

Normally gloss, but the glossyness could very depending on the make of the plate.
It depends if you want to make your plates look brand new or use satin for a more aged look.
