Well done - at least it is started... So - try swinging the dizzy slightly each way - to find the best idling position. And check the vacuum advance. then adjust the carb - again for 'best idle' and see if that helps.....

Took for a little drive today, takes an age to pull away will not pull under revs wondering if I set the tappets to correct distance 12thou, I have read on site that it should be 15' could this cause these problems?

15 is better longterm for the exhausts - but has nothing to do with your problem. Are the plug leads on right order 1342 anti clock round the dizzy cap? Are all 4 plugs firing? Is the carb piston rising and falling easily - with a nice clunk when it drops? If you crank it round on the handle (Ign off) - can you feel 4 distinct compressions?
