Hs4 installation ?

Post by samir »

Hi, iv changed my manifold and installing a hs4 carb. However I'm having a few problems as I'm a novice, iv hooked up the choke cable but the accelerator cable was to short, also where do all the other pipes go like the one coming from the dizzy and the pipe that connects to the rocker cover ? Also there are two pipes on the float bowl lid, do I block one? Iv added a few pictures so someone maybe able to help me. Thanks people.[frame]Image[/frame]

There should be a phenolic black plastic spacer between manifold and carb.... Yes - you need the longer acc cable. I think (but not sure - since I don't have an HS4 handy) your fuel pipe is on the wrong connection on the float bowl - that one is the vent and not to be blocked. The rocker vent pipe goes on the brass stub sticking out just above the float bowl. I don't see a vac connection for the dizzy - need better pics!

The black spacer is now painted red that's why I don't think you can tell :) oh right so the fuel pipe needs to be connected to the pipe next where I have got it currently? So what do I do with the other pipe just leave it open ? Does my choke look ok? Also bmc any tips on getting it running as it's in the garage at the moment and will be hopefully trying to get it started tomorrow morning. Sorry about the pics they were quick as the garage was shutting and I wanted a few pics so you friendly bunch could maybe tell me if I'm going wrong. :)

Ah right -I see the block now ...painted 'red' As I said -I think it's wrong - but you can try it as you have it and if petrol squirts out the other pipe - then it IS wrong. I'm really not sure now...and no access to anything to compare I'm afraid. Just crank it up - and if it revs too high just wind the throttle stop screw down. Is there really no small connection for the vac pipe?

In the second picture there's a pipe going across onto a black rubber pipe, that black pipe is connected to a little brass tube the comes out. The pipe going across the picture is the pipe coming from the dizzy. That's where iv connected it.

Does the engine breather be on the rocker cover ? Because it does have a pipe coming from the rocker cover

Ok -right I see the vac pipe now - that will be fine, although it may get in the way of the acc cable - so you may need to re-route it...... The rocker breather pipe goes to the brass tube sticking out above the float chamber - you may need to squash the pipe down with a small clip to make it grip the brass tube. Mixture wise - we have no idea - just open the 'choke' (it's not a choke - it's a mixture enrichment device) and crank the engine. If it starts and revs up too high - be ready to push the choke in and/or switch off........

The throttle cable above, I bought a longer wire for it but the mechanic is telling me I need the green pipe to be longer aswell. Is this true as I can't find any motor shop that does longer piping, and I'm totally stuck now, could someone please help. Thanks

You need a complete longer cable - common enough I think! And always buy a spare - or at least carry the inner as a spare.

Common? I went to five auto shops and none of them had a clue about having a longer pipe. So I had to extend the current pipe and got it fired up today. The k n sounds nice. Iv just got to tune it now like the idle speed and mixture. Am I right in thinking the old metro throttle cables would be suitable?

Hey hope everyone's well. Just had a run down the a38 with the hs4, power delivery is good and at middle and full throttle everything is fine, but on partial throttle it does tend to stutter slightly. Do you know what could be the cause of this? Also a bit more worrying is that when I turned the car off it was not going off properly and felt like it was going to start again but then died. Anybody have a clue?

Well done - certainly used to be easy to buy throttle cables any reasonable length - it was common mod on a Mini to fit a long cable with smooth curves to make for nice throttle action. Stuttering - try heavier (or lighter!) oil in the damper. You need to check the plug colour after a good run - switch off without idling and drift to a halt - and whip out a couple of plugs to see the colour. Running on - often caused by retarded ignition. Advance it till it pinks - then retard till it's ;not quite' pinking. But also rich mixture (black plugs) will do it.
