Old Club Membership Badge

Post by Boomlander »

Hi all,
I recently bought an old MMOC badge with the membership number 434 on it.
Obviously it must be quite old and I was wondering if any of the club members would know when it was originally issued and to whom.
I'm not sure how long the membership records go back to but it would be great to find someone with a link to the badge.

This badge is a black rectangle with white inlaid lettering.

I wonder whether that is a plaque that someone had made to go at the top of an "honours" board for display at rallys? It looks like something that would be screwed to a wooden board. I suspect that it is black "plastic" sandwiched with a white filling. Engraving removes the black leaving the white showing through.

When I bought the badge it had metal grille fixing lugs at each side but they were rusted solid and I had to cut them off to prevent any contamination of the badge itself.
It is as you say a lamination of plastic or Bakelite type materials with the lettering stamped out of the top black layer exposing the white layer beneath and must have been fitted to a vehicle grille at some point.
Bit of a mystery though... :-?

If you get a list of previous keepers from the DVLA, then you should be able to work out who owned the car in the year that the MMOC was formed - number 434 must be in the first year. Purely a matter of interest, but nice to have that piece of history. You could write a latter for member number 434 and send it to the Derby office, asking them to forward it on, if they still have details. I suspect that the badge is a home made one, not issued by the club.

The MMOC was formed in 1976, I joined in 1978 when membership increased dramatically. Perhaps "The History of the MMOC" could be the title of Ray Newell's next book.

Hi,
If not his next book, then it could at least make an interesting series of articles for the magazine.
Best wishes,
Mike.

Actually probably Cobex, pressed sheet for engraving - I used to work for the company that made it; I just didn;t want to get technical.
