Post by Nutts »

Hi Looking for advice I have a 54 split screen which has devolped a noise in 1st gear sounds it is catching something ?

Had it out and turns ok could find no loose parts, only a bit of ware on selector forks and reverse a bit chewed ?

Any suggestions ?

Are A30 gearboxes the same ?

Yes -the same -although I'm not sure how the clutch was operated on an A30, but you can just use the Minor parts. Good news is you can use the rather better 948 'smooth case' gearbox - and just swap the pudding stirrer tail assembly from your old box on to the 948 box.

The tail piece of the A30 box is shorter so you'll need to swap it

On this 'box first gear is noisy. As long as it is functioning correctly live with it.

You'll have noticed that the synchromesh takes a while to catch up, so gear changes should be done slowly but decisively. Of course, this is not applicable to first gear.
