Spray can painted classic!

Whilst at the Uttoxeter show last Sunday, there was a stunning Triumph Herald on display that caught my eye.
Absolutely pristine it was, but that wasn't the biggest suprise, no, that was reserved for the statement on the window claiming that the owner resprayed it completely several years ago using 35 SPRAY CANS!!!

The finish was stunning and completely professional looking.
Didn't get chance to speak to the owner to confirm what he'd written unfortunately.

Anyone else seen this car before, and can it really be true, 'cus I'm doubtful tbh.

yes it is possible...
a friend of my late father sprayed a rover90 with rattle cans.
he had them fill at apec paints, a grey colour.
the trick he said was to place the paint cans in a large pan
of very hot water
many people thought it was done at a paint shop

Might be better to hand paint in coach enamel

I'd love to have a go at doing this. Something I've never considered before tbh as I thought it the finish would be wishy washy.

Need to get myself a banger to practice on me thinks.

Tell you, I've seen many so called professional re-sprays that were vastly inferior to this Triumph.

Keep an eye out for it at future shows, and you'll see what I mean!

35 cans at around 5 pounds each equals £175, you could buy a cheap spray set up from Aldi etc and acouple of litres of celly paint for much the same.

Rollered coach paint is much cheaper though, (around £30 for paint and material).

Yea, very true.
It's not so much the cost that I was thinking about, it was the stunning and amazing finish that he'd achieved!
Sorry if I'm raving on too much perhaps, but it really was that good, a finish that I'd previously have said was absolutely impossible using such a seemingly crude method.

Hi,
Prior to applying primer to my repaired spare boot-lid ready for a respray I was advised that putting the cans in boiling water will improve their discharge.
And indeed it did, I got a very fine, consistant mist of spray from a standard rattle can as a result. Also by putting them back into the boiling water between coats they didn't de-pressurise as I used up the paint in them.
The result was very even coats that were a easy to flat back and get a good result from.
So I would think it could be possible but I prefer the idea of buying my own spray gun for the colour coats if I attempt this at home in the future, something I am considering.......
I shall be keeping my old panels to practice on first though......
Fair play to the Triumph owner though.

I have recently being respraying my minor with rattle cans. I did this for two reasons, one was that I had very little time to do the work anyway, so taking a panel by panel approach over a few weeks worked best for me. Secondly, I'm a bit asthmatic so doing it in small doses seemed less hazardous to my health than a full spray gun set-up. I have been properly masked up even with the spray cans though!

The finish isn't too bad at all - pretty even and good depth of colour but I won't really know the end result until I rub and polish when the paint is dry.

I used rattle cans on some parts of my Trav when I first got it........made a huge improvement for v little money. And yes - soak in hot water is standard practice - and of course a still, warm day is essential. Also - resist the temptation to keep going back and adding a bit more..... One quick spray then walk away - at least to another panel. A mate resprayed his MGC using the spray gun that used to come free with a tubular vacuum cleaner (it fits on the outlet from the cleaner) ....the finish is absolutely perfect - deep red shine without the slightest blemish or orange peel etc - better than original.......

15 years ago, I resprayed a morris minor pickup with 88 tins of Connaught green carplan cans, got a job lot at a baragin price... the end result was very good... looked superb with a new canvas on the rear and ended up selling it for a deopist on a house and got £3500 which was good money back then.. people thought it had received a good respray and got admiring comments where ever I went... these are cheap aersols aswell, the new custom ones you can buy from paintshops these days are superb.....

i have also seen a herald in dark blue from manchester area, seen it at shows around sheffield a few times its is stunningly shiny, i talked to the owner and he claims its done by aerosol cans. The owner came accross as very genuine!

I blew over a Reliant Rialto that had sat in the sun a bit long with rattle cans. Took me an evening, and 4 rattle cans of Ford Grenada red IIRC, as well as an old newspaper to save the windows. For the £30 or so it cost me, it smartened the motor up considerably. I think I'd only given £300 for the car, with a 12mth MOT attached.

I have a very rare and early Citroen AX GT that could do with a re-spray tbh.....mmmmm.

a few years back a mate and i painted a old mini.
he had fully prep'ed the car.
then it was ready for the paint job.
the poor sod lost his job.
so off to poundland we went
came back with 40 cans of gloss black..
which we used in his dads garage.
it came out a treat.
i don't think we used all 40 cans
so plenty left for touch-ups

it was the best paint job i've seen, at £1 can
