car description???

Post by margriff »

While regularly looking on websitesat classic cars I am puzzled by something. Can anyone explain to me what the numbers either side of the forward slash mean...in a classic car description...for example:-

Triumph Herald 13/60 Estate

What does the 13/60 mean?

They're usually some amalgamation of engine size, number of cylinders, and/or engine power.

So 13/60 could be a 1.3 engine with 60bhp.

Wolseleys have models '6/90' and '6/110'. Those perhaps being 6 cylinders, with 90 and 110bhp respectively.

More modern cars, do similar things too. A Mercedes C220 would be a C-class with a 2.2 engine. A BMW 318 would be a 3 series with a 1.8 engine. And so on.

Motoring publications of the day sometimes mention this as the Minor being the only car that understates its engine size. It would be to do with an established brand, the earlier 948 and the real Morris 1100.
