Well, you can put what you like in your radiator... some people crack eggs into it. Wouldn't fancy an exploding radiator myself...

You have already been told what antifreeze to use and the quantity.

I have a boat which is used which is used for two 3 monthly periods each year and laid up for the other two. The engine is a Volvo marine diesel which is raw water (sea water) cooled and these are very prone to internal corrosion. Before leaving the boat, the engine is flushed with fresh water, then left with a 50/50 solution of anti-freeze and de-ionized water. In Greece, in Summer, there is no risk of frost! The anti-freeze is there for it's anti corrosive properties. Unlike many others, we have had no problems with corrosion in 16 years.

For what it costs, use a 50% solution all year round - believe me, it's cheaper than a new block. As an aside, standby generators (used in hospitals, food storage, etc,) have in 100% anti-freeze all the time - again, more for corrosion protection than frost protection. I've also been told that engines run cooler on neat anti-freeze, so may run cooler on a 50% solution.

What about the water, is it best if its distilled or de-ionised rather than straight from the tap?
